Maths
Mathematics at St Augustine’s is really important to us as we strive to provide the opportunity for ALL children, irrespective of their ability and home language to access daily Maths lessons. At St Augustine’s, we have adopted the small steps from ‘White Rose Maths’ as our key objectives to follow and teachers use this to form the basis of the learning. Teachers also use other resources, such as Target Maths to ensure that every child gets extended opportunities to improve and gain new fluency skills on a daily basis before moving onto reasoning and problem-solving questions.
Times tables are a key part of the Mathematics primary curriculum and this is why children take part in a short daily times table session. In these sessions, children chant and learn a specific times table using a fun and fast-paced method. Their retention of these key skills is then checked as they complete a short 1-minute check on the fifth day.
Every year, children in Years 2-6 get the chance to take part in our annual ‘Rockstar’ competition where children get to showcase their times table ability and speed!
